How Acro Yoga Cape Town Was Born

From Play to Passion: Our Journey into Acro Yoga

It All Started with Play.

Isobel grew up in Zip Zap Circus, where flipping, balancing, and flying were just part of everyday life, being upside down is what she knows best. Gaby has always been drawn to movement, exploring different ways to stay active and push her body in all types of sports. In 2019, we started messing around with Acro Yoga—just two friends trying, falling, laughing, and trying again.

What started as fun quickly became something more. Acro Yoga wasn’t just about building strength or learning cool tricks—it was about connection, trust, and rediscovering that childlike sense of play. There’s something so freeing about letting go of expectations, stepping out of your comfort zone, and just playing like a kid again.

In 2022, Gaby took this passion further, teaching Acro Yoga in Sri Lanka and sharing the practice with people from all walks of life. Seeing how Acro Yoga could bring people together, regardless of background or experience, made us even more certain that we wanted to build something here in Cape Town. In 2023, we started teaching together, and Acro Yoga Cape Town was born.

Acro Yoga: Movement for Every Body
One of the most beautiful things about Acro Yoga is that anyone and everyone can do it.

It doesn’t matter if you’re young or old, super strong or just starting your movement journey, flexible or stiff as a board—Acro Yoga can be adapted for you. There’s no single “body type” or “skill level” needed to start. Age, gender, physique—it doesn’t matter. Acro works between any two partners, and the beauty of it is that each partnership finds its own unique balance and flow.

We’ve had people of all different backgrounds step onto the mat and surprise themselves. Acro Yoga teaches you that you’re capable of more than you think, and it gives you a chance to push past self-doubt in a safe and supportive way.

It’s also a great activity to do with friends! Whether you come with a partner or join solo, Acro creates a sense of teamwork & connection & trust. There’s something truly special about laughing through the wobbles, celebrating small wins, and learning to trust both yourself and your partner.

Acro Cape Town & Flow Stories have been in support of eachother since the get go ! Flow Stories makes our practice so comfortable and makes us feel so confident doing acro in our pieces! Hana is an artisan herself, with what she’s made and created and how it’s grown into what is it, it’s inspiring. It has been a privilege to have Flow Stories be part of our blooming community, to be in full support of each other since the beginning of our journey has been such a blessing ! We can’t wait to create more connection and art with Flow Stories in the coming future & to share that journey with you all and eachother 🦋
